Packing Crystal and Glassware Every piece of crystal and glassware should be individually covered with bubble wrap. If you pack more than one piece of crystal or glassware into a single box, go ahead and use dividers to prevent your items from bumping into each other during transit. You should also cushion the bottom of the box with a layer of materials such as extra bubble wrap or packing peanuts. Padded dish boxes work very well for transporting crystal or glassware. Be sure to mark “Fragile” and “This Side Up” on the box for the movers. Removing the Weights in a Grandfather Clock If you can’t afford to hire a clock specialist to service your grandfather clock, you can carefully remove the weights yourself. You should always don cotton gloves before you change/remove anything inside the clock. Remove the weights piece by piece and note each of their respective positions so you can reinstall them in the correct order. If the weights are suspended by cables, break off an adequately-sized piece of Styrofoam, cut a slit through the middle, and fit the Styrofoam around the pulley. This way, it'll prevent any damage your pulleys may receive during transit. Afterwards, remove the weights. Helping the Kids Adjust Kids can have a lot of difficulty adjusting to the idea of moving. You can make the process enjoyable for the kids by planning and packing with them. If it's possible, give them a blueprint or a sketch of their new rooms. Ask your kids what they would like to do with their rooms like colors and designs. Sit down and go through their toys. Let your kids decide what they want to keep and what they want to throw away. By getting them involved, your kids will not only feel better, they might even be enthused about living in a new place. Moving Your Waterbed Before you move your waterbed, it may be in your best interest to invest in a protection plan in case it suffers any damage during transit. You'll want to drain the waterbed mattress with a drain pump, or if you're pressed for time, an electric pump which can deflate a waterbed mattress in half an hour. The time it takes to drain is contingent on what type of mattress you have and the water pressure. Once that's done, make sure you fold it from head to foot and pack it away in a carton. Make sure that there isn't anything inside that could potentially puncture it.
