Registering In a New State When you’re moving long distance, you should prioritize what items should be packed first amongst other considerations. Registering your car is also something to be aware of since you’ll assumedly be crossing into another state. Remember that each state has its own set of rules in terms of vehicle registration and tags, so be sure to research it prior to your move. That way, you can take the necessary steps once you’re there. Packing Your Table Lamps When packing your table lamp, make sure you have an adequately sized box to accommodate it. If you can't find a carton that fits the size of your lamp, a dishpack carton will work as a substitute. Make sure you line the bottom of the box you're using with enough cushioning. So before you start packing your table lamp, remove the bulb and the lampshade. Wrap the lamp's cord around the base. Avoid using packing tape as it may strip the paint or outer coating of your lamp. Afterwards, cover the lamp in bubble wrap and fold over the edges on the top and bottom before you tape. Put the lamp in the box and fill any spaces with extra bubble wrap to prevent shifting during transit. Basic Furniture Moving When moving furniture, make sure to remove any glass surfaces and pack them separately. Wrap them in moving pads to prevent any possible damage during transit. Never slide or drag your furniture along hardwood floors; carpeted dollies or furniture glides are a good investment for moving heavy pieces of furniture. Moving Out of Your Apartment? Regardless of whether or not you're on a month-to-month lease, you should give an official written notice of your move-out date at least a month in advance. This is standard procedure and it can give you and your landlord sufficient time to settle matters such as your security deposit. If you're on a full-term lease, you may be liable for an early termination penalty. If it's possible, schedule your move-out date around the same time as the end of your lease to avoid paying for the penalty.
