Packing Your Mirrors Packing mirrors require special attention. You can safely wrap your mirrors in tissue paper or cover the mirror face with masking tape. However, if you have more expensive mirrors to move, you should consider investing in boxes that are specifically designed for transporting mirrors. Removing the Weights in a Grandfather Clock If you can’t afford to hire a clock specialist to service your grandfather clock, you can carefully remove the weights yourself. You should always don cotton gloves before you change/remove anything inside the clock. Remove the weights piece by piece and note each of their respective positions so you can reinstall them in the correct order. If the weights are suspended by cables, break off an adequately-sized piece of Styrofoam, cut a slit through the middle, and fit the Styrofoam around the pulley. This way, it'll prevent any damage your pulleys may receive during transit. Afterwards, remove the weights. Preparing Pots and Pans for Moving Although pots and pans vary in size, you can usually nest about three of each together in a single carton. Make sure you have large enough pieces of packing paper to cover the entire interior of your largest pan and leave some cushioning on the bottom of the crate. The first pot or pan you place inside the box should be the smallest in size. The pan or pot should be upside down with several sheets of packing paper on top of it before you stack the next one. Once you've stacked three, fill the spaces with packing material to prevent shifting. When Moving Your Piano When preparing to move your piano, there are a few things you should keep in mind before you start. First, you should know the approximate weight of your instrument. Baby grand pianos weigh around 500 to 800 pounds, and longer grand pianos can weigh up to 1200 pounds respectively. You should never rely on the piano's casters to move the piano as most are simply meant for decorative purposes. By forcing the casters to move across your floor, you risk jamming the casters, possibly tearing and gouging your carpet or floor. A 4-wheel piano dolly is absolutely essential.
