Your Emergency Backpack It’s a good idea to have an emergency kit or backpack ready as you move to your new home. You should reserve this backpack for unforeseen cases and pack it appropriately with all of the essential items. For example, you should have a small toiletry kit, bottles of water, a change of clothing, a first aid kid, and a flashlight in there. Plastic Durability If you have any plastic kitchen containers such as Tupperware, you can use these to protect your smaller more fragile items. If you want to insure a more shock-absorbent capacity, you can double-box the containers before placing your items inside. Meter Readings Before you close the door to your old home for the last time, jot down all of your meter readings. This way, you have a reference to look back on once you receive your final bill from the utility companies. You can also call the utility companies to arrange for meter readings on the last day if you have time. Packing Your Lamp Shadees Your lamp shades should be packed in a separate box from your lamps. Avoid using newspaper as stuffing material as the ink may cause stains on your shades. Use clean packing paper or bubble wrap to protect your lamp shades' linings. Try stacking your lamp shades into a single, large carton with packing material between each.
