Moving Labor If you have friends with strong backs or family members who can lend a helping hand, you can save money by asking them to help you out on moving day. That way, you’ll have all of your furniture and belongings ready for loading before the movers arrive, and it’ll expedite the process so you can be one step closer to getting to your new home. Naturally, moving your belongings without hired help comes with its own risks. Movers are professionally trained to handle your belongings with the least amount of risk. Removing the Weights in a Grandfather Clock If you can’t afford to hire a clock specialist to service your grandfather clock, you can carefully remove the weights yourself. You should always don cotton gloves before you change/remove anything inside the clock. Remove the weights piece by piece and note each of their respective positions so you can reinstall them in the correct order. If the weights are suspended by cables, break off an adequately-sized piece of Styrofoam, cut a slit through the middle, and fit the Styrofoam around the pulley. This way, it'll prevent any damage your pulleys may receive during transit. Afterwards, remove the weights. Moving Your Waterbed Before you move your waterbed, it may be in your best interest to invest in a protection plan in case it suffers any damage during transit. You'll want to drain the waterbed mattress with a drain pump, or if you're pressed for time, an electric pump which can deflate a waterbed mattress in half an hour. The time it takes to drain is contingent on what type of mattress you have and the water pressure. Once that's done, make sure you fold it from head to foot and pack it away in a carton. Make sure that there isn't anything inside that could potentially puncture it. Moving In a Passenger Car What most people don't know is that most car accidents that involve a large truck are often caused by the smaller vehicle. Not many people know how to safely pass a big rig or what to do when a truck is preparing to make a wide turn. If you're moving in a passenger vehicle, you should keep a few things in mind. Always pass on the left side of a big rig. A large truck requires more stopping distance than a car, so try to maintain a fair amount of distance between the both of you if you're ahead.
