Moving Check List
Before Your Move
Once you've decided on a moving service, make any necessary travel and storage arrangements for you and your family.
Notify people and companies about your change of address, including but not limited to friends and family, the local post office, your credit card and insurance companies.
Arrange for the transfer of important documents, such as medical, veterinary, and academic records.
Get a spiral notebook and take a tour around your house. Make an inventory of all your personal belongings.
Get packing supplies and start packing your items a few hours every day. Set aside one box to be unpacked first when you arrive at your new destination. It should be filled with essential items.
Once you've finished unpacking a room, you should clean it immediately after.
Host a yard or garage sale to recoup moving expenses by selling your undesirables.
Schedule the cancellation or transfer of your utility services, such as electricity, water, and gas.
Make travel and lodging arrangements for you and your family.
If applicable, transfer any medical prescriptions you have.
Clean out the fridge, defrost the freezer, and clean out any other appliances you plan on moving.
Unplug your appliances and drain your power tools.
During Your Move
If you have pets or kids, make sure to have a sitter available on moving day.
Tour with the movers and show them which boxes and items should be delivered and which boxes you intend to bring yourself.
Gather your spare keys and garage openers for the real estate agent or the next tenant.
Once your movers have finished loading the truck, give your old home one final tour before closing the door. See if the house sustained any visible damage during the move or if anything was left behind.
Be sure to exchange phone numbers with the truck driver so you can maintain contact in case something happens.
Check in with a close friend or family member periodically while you're en route to your new home.
Call your utility companies ahead of time to check and see if your power, gas, and water will be running once you arrive.
Ideally, you should reach your destination before your movers so that you can supervise the unloading process.
After Your Move
Unpack your essentials box and reassemble your beds.
Plug in your major appliances and unpack all of your electrical items as soon as possible.
If you need to change your driver's license or register for a new license plate, schedule appointments at your local DMV as soon as possible.
Update your voter's registration.
Designate a few hours a day to unpacking the rest of your items.
Sign up for local services such as cable, internet and telephone.
