Meter Readings Before you close the door to your old home for the last time, jot down all of your meter readings. This way, you have a reference to look back on once you receive your final bill from the utility companies. You can also call the utility companies to arrange for meter readings on the last day if you have time. Removing the Weights in a Grandfather Clock If you can’t afford to hire a clock specialist to service your grandfather clock, you can carefully remove the weights yourself. You should always don cotton gloves before you change/remove anything inside the clock. Remove the weights piece by piece and note each of their respective positions so you can reinstall them in the correct order. If the weights are suspended by cables, break off an adequately-sized piece of Styrofoam, cut a slit through the middle, and fit the Styrofoam around the pulley. This way, it'll prevent any damage your pulleys may receive during transit. Afterwards, remove the weights. Packing Your Table Lamps When packing your table lamp, make sure you have an adequately sized box to accommodate it. If you can't find a carton that fits the size of your lamp, a dishpack carton will work as a substitute. Make sure you line the bottom of the box you're using with enough cushioning. So before you start packing your table lamp, remove the bulb and the lampshade. Wrap the lamp's cord around the base. Avoid using packing tape as it may strip the paint or outer coating of your lamp. Afterwards, cover the lamp in bubble wrap and fold over the edges on the top and bottom before you tape. Put the lamp in the box and fill any spaces with extra bubble wrap to prevent shifting during transit. Packing Heavy Items There are a few things you should keep in mind when you're packing items that weigh more than thirty pounds. Firstly, the box you're using should be of a stronger quality with seams that are either stitched or stapled. To prevent crushing or shifting, invest in corrugated or molded foams to protect your heavier belongings instead of packing paper or peanuts. Heavy cushioning could mean the difference between seeing your items safely home and finding them damaged after you unpack.
