Packing Crystal and Glassware Every piece of crystal and glassware should be individually covered with bubble wrap. If you pack more than one piece of crystal or glassware into a single box, go ahead and use dividers to prevent your items from bumping into each other during transit. You should also cushion the bottom of the box with a layer of materials such as extra bubble wrap or packing peanuts. Padded dish boxes work very well for transporting crystal or glassware. Be sure to mark “Fragile” and “This Side Up” on the box for the movers. Help Your Movers You should try to arrive at your new home before your movers do so that you can oversee the unloading process, and also to help them out as much as you can. A great way to help them figure out which boxes go where is by taping names to the doors. Also, try mapping out the floor plans of your new house so they know where to go. Removing the Weights in a Grandfather Clock If you can’t afford to hire a clock specialist to service your grandfather clock, you can carefully remove the weights yourself. You should always don cotton gloves before you change/remove anything inside the clock. Remove the weights piece by piece and note each of their respective positions so you can reinstall them in the correct order. If the weights are suspended by cables, break off an adequately-sized piece of Styrofoam, cut a slit through the middle, and fit the Styrofoam around the pulley. This way, it'll prevent any damage your pulleys may receive during transit. Afterwards, remove the weights. Moving Out of Your Apartment? Regardless of whether or not you're on a month-to-month lease, you should give an official written notice of your move-out date at least a month in advance. This is standard procedure and it can give you and your landlord sufficient time to settle matters such as your security deposit. If you're on a full-term lease, you may be liable for an early termination penalty. If it's possible, schedule your move-out date around the same time as the end of your lease to avoid paying for the penalty.
