Appliance Checkup Be proactive about making sure that your appliances are hooked up and running smoothly once you move in. It’s also a good way of checking to see if your utilities are connected. Packing Your Table Lamps When packing your table lamp, make sure you have an adequately sized box to accommodate it. If you can't find a carton that fits the size of your lamp, a dishpack carton will work as a substitute. Make sure you line the bottom of the box you're using with enough cushioning. So before you start packing your table lamp, remove the bulb and the lampshade. Wrap the lamp's cord around the base. Avoid using packing tape as it may strip the paint or outer coating of your lamp. Afterwards, cover the lamp in bubble wrap and fold over the edges on the top and bottom before you tape. Put the lamp in the box and fill any spaces with extra bubble wrap to prevent shifting during transit. Preparing Pots and Pans for Moving Although pots and pans vary in size, you can usually nest about three of each together in a single carton. Make sure you have large enough pieces of packing paper to cover the entire interior of your largest pan and leave some cushioning on the bottom of the crate. The first pot or pan you place inside the box should be the smallest in size. The pan or pot should be upside down with several sheets of packing paper on top of it before you stack the next one. Once you've stacked three, fill the spaces with packing material to prevent shifting. Removing Your Bicycle's Chains It's recommended that you disassemble your bicycle into its individual parts before moving. The process of removing your bike's cables is simple. You'll want to take the cables out of the bike's stops. In order to slacken the brake cables, undo the releases on the arms or at the levers depending on what kind of bicycle you have. You can slacken the shifting cables by putting chain in the big cog combo before shifting down. Once all of the cables have been removed, you can disassemble the rest of the bike.
